Tap-to-pay scams: Thieves can steal money with a simple bump

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — Tap-to-pay has quickly become a method that criminals are using to be able to charge your credit or debit card without you even realizing it.

Also called “ghost tapping,” this form of scam is easy to pull off, and some victims have been targeted while shopping at legitimate retail stores.

According to the BBB scam tracker and the Federal Trade Commission, scammers will use fake vendor setups to steal your money. Fraudsters can bump into you in crowded spaces, and with the help of a device, they can initiate a transaction, and you will be none the wiser. Another method used is collecting money for fake charities, allowing scammers to exploit contactless payment systems to make high-dollar charges or set up recurring charges.
