Albuquerque fire crews respond to abandoned apartment complex for the 5th time this year

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It was a familiar call Friday night, with Albuquerque Fire Rescue responding to a northeast apartment once again. That property is 7901 Marquette, near Wyoming Blvd. and Lomas Blvd., a place AFR said draws in squatters looking for a place to keep warm.

“Once a property does become vacant, it has the tendency to go down this line very quickly. So this property has experienced multiple fires, and really the issue with it is each time one of these properties burns, it makes it that much more susceptible to other fires,” explained AFR’s Lt. Jason Fejer.

And the problems even date back to last year, too. Albuquerque Fire Rescue Lieutenant Jason Fejer said the more calls they go to, the more dangerous the scene gets. When fire crews respond to structure fires, they cut holes to try to ventilate and control the fire. However, despite being boarded up, AFR said people keep finding ways to get back in. “It doesn’t take long, since a lot of this activity is hidden, that people start removing the boards and they start squatting in these kind of structures again,” explained Fejer…
