A judge ruled Monday that there is sufficient evidence for a Detroit mother to face trial on murder charges, following testimony that she beat her 14-year-old special needs daughter to death because she viewed the child as an obstacle to her relationship with a boyfriend.
Vangie Renee Averhart, 37, is accused of killing Kylee Clark, who died in a hospital last July. Kylee was nonverbal and diagnosed with both autism and Cornelia de Lange syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting development, according to the Detroit News.
During the preliminary hearing, prosecutors argued that Averhart no longer wanted the responsibility of caring for Kylee. Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Tina Ripley stated that the defendant “made it very clear” she wanted to be with her boyfriend rather than her daughter…
