SHREWSBURY – Dealing a blow to Market Basket, the Zoning Board of Appeals upheld approval for a Yatco gas station complex to be constructed across the street from the grocer along Route 20. The unanimous vote on Monday, Dec. 22, put an end to the nearly yearlong battle Yatco faced in assuaging concerns, raised in part by Market Basket, that its construction would worsen traffic in an already congested area.
“The nine-month process that the Planning Board undertook was thoughtful and careful,” said Julie Holstrom, the board’s chairperson, of the decision. “If there are concerns, the hope is that we will be proactive and step in and make sure there are modifications that are done.”
The gas station is set to be built at 193 Hartford Turnpike (Route 20). Plans for the site include a 7,000-square-foot building that would contain a convenience store, a quick-stop restaurant and a drive-thru window. A separate 4,800-square-foot building would house a car wash…
