Santa, reindeer, Grinch waterski on Potomac River in 40th annual tradition

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (DC News Now) — Santa Claus made an early stop in Northern Virginia on the afternoon of Christmas Eve, swapping his sleigh for a pair of water skis as he cruised along the Potomac River in Old Town Alexandria.

The now 40-year-old tradition once again drew families to the waterfront Wednesday, where spectators gathered in the sunshine to watch Santa and his reindeer and elves perform water tricks and spread holiday cheer just hours before his busiest night of the year.

For many watching from shore, the spectacle has become a can’t-miss holiday moment. Parents and children alike pointed and cheered as holiday character favorites glided past, with some families returning year after year.

Visitors described it as a uniquely local tradition — a warm-weather twist on a classic Christmas image — offering a chance to enjoy the outdoors, soak in the season, and create memories that feel distinctly “Alexandria.”

Santa wasn’t alone on the water. Alexandria police joined the fun, playfully keeping an eye out for the Grinch, while ‘Nightmare Before Christmas characters like Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie made surprise appearances.
