SnowCap food bank feeding families who reach ‘bottom of the barrel’ over holidays

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – As more families struggle to put food on the table, local food banks say they are seeing a demand that is reminiscent of the 2020 pandemic.

Food banks across the region like SnowCap in Southeast Portland are stepping in for thousands feeling the pinch. But while the lines may look quiet, the need has never been greater.

“They’re always here when you’re like, at the bottom of the barrel of your food items for your kids and stuff. So, I was driving by, and I didn’t see a long line, so I definitely pulled in,” SnowCap recipient Shantel Banks said.

SnowCap keeps their pantry open until 2 p.m. both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Organizers say they have gifted 8,000 new socks, hats and gloves and served nearly 300 families in a single day…
