Ohio auditor finds companies don’t uphold their promises after state tax credit awards

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Ohio auditor found the majority of companies that receive state incentives have not met the job creation or payroll commitments listed in award agreements.

Auditor of State Keith Faber’s office published a report this month examining state incentives for job creation investments and found 39 of 60 companies were noncompliant with their end of the deal. Auditors also said most companies deemed noncompliant faced no consequences. See previous coverage of state tax credits in the video player above.

“These agreements are meant to encourage job growth and community prosperity,” Faber said. “If we’re not going to hold companies accountable for their job and payroll commitments, then these agreements are only depriving Ohioans of financial resources that could be used elsewhere.”

Despite not living up to agreements, companies still received their tax credits, allowing companies to not pay taxes on certain goods to incentivize Ohio as a destination for businesses.
