Warm Records Shattered Ahead of Significant Cold Snap

Right now, and continuing through the weekend, we are expecting record-breaking warmth. Temperatures today, Friday, have a very high chance, between 70-95 percent, of soaring to or even surpassing 70 degrees across much of our viewing area. Many of our local record high temperatures are in the low 70s, so we’re looking at a genuine shot at breaking them. Even our overnight low records are also on the table to be challenged.

However, this incredible warmth won’t last. This remarkable pattern takes a dramatic turn late Sunday. A strong cold front is forecast to push through, bringing with it widespread rain throughout Sunday afternoon and evening. We’ll also be monitoring a chance of thunderstorms within that system, and while it doesn’t look like widespread severe weather, a few strong storms producing damaging wind gusts can’t be ruled out.

Following that front, we anticipate a brief but significant blast of cold air arriving Sunday night and lingering into early next week. By Monday, temperatures will likely be below freezing across the entire area. Temperatures could plunge into the single digits Monday night into Tuesday morning…
