Kwanzaa Celebration 2025 at the Boutwell celebrates the principle of unity on day 1 of the 7-day holiday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Friday, December 26th marked the first day of Kwanzaa, a secular holiday which has become a nationally recognized celebration of African culture and African American culture since its founding in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga after the Watts riots in Los Angeles.

This year, the seven-day cultural celebration ends on Thursday, January 1st, 2026.
