Caldecott Tunnel fully reopens after two-day partial closure

The Caldecott Tunnel fully reopened Friday evening after three blown transformers forced it to partially close on Christmas Eve, shutting down half of its bores for almost two days.

The Orinda tunnel’s electrical system broke down around 7 p.m. Wednesday, said Caltrans spokesperson Bart Ney, as a spate of powerful storms cut power and flooded roadways in communities around the state.

The eastbound Bore 1 and westbound Bore 3 were closed until 4 p.m. Friday, with traffic in both directions funneled through the remaining two bores. Both bores reopened around  5 p.m. Friday, according to a post from Caltrans on social media…
