AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Amarillo Police Department is alerting the public over a hotel reservation phishing scam.
According to APD, the scam involves receiving a confirmation email for a hotel reservation, where it states that the individual needs to confirm the reservation within 24 hours to avoid cancellation. Officials noted the email provides a link to confirm the booking, and those who are travelling during the holidays may believe the email is related to travel plans; however, the confirmation link leads to a fake webpage created by “cybercriminals.”

APD provided tips to those who may receive this phishing scam, including:
- Scammers often create a sense of urgency to trick you into acting quickly. Remember, always think before you take action!
- Legitimate travel sites won’t ask you to confirm your booking with your payment information. Your payment details are usually collected when you book your travel plans, and not afterwards through confirmation emails.
- Verify your booking confirmation directly on the official website or mobile app, rather than selecting links in an email you received.
APD stated that the page instructs individuals to enter credit card information to secure the reservation, for cybercriminals to steal the information that individuals enter.
