Arkansas ends .125% grocery sales tax, saving residents millions in 2026

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Next week doesn’t just mark the beginning of a new year, but it also marks the start of several new state laws that will go into effect. Several state laws will affect Arkansans, but one will affect grocery prices.

House Bill 1685 was introduced during the general session to eliminate the state tax on food and food ingredients. The House bill would eventually pass and be signed into law as 1008.

“Anytime that we can, you know, save our the consumer can save $1 at the grocery store. I think that’s a win. You know, this will save consumers statewide over the course of the year, you know, somewhere between 10 and $12 million annually. And so that’s, that’s real money that they’ll have in their pockets to spend, you know, either in the grocery store for some additional items or somewhere else in their in their family’s monthly budget,” Steve Goode, the Executive Director for the Arkansas Grocers & Retail Merchants Association, said…
