New laws to increase DUI penalties and alter insurance coverage in January

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Several new laws will take effect on Jan. 1, including tougher penalties for impaired drivers involved in crashes resulting in serious injury or death.

Currently, the minimum sentence is two years without probation, with a maximum of 20 years in prison.

However, starting in the new year, the maximum sentence will increase to 25 years. “The back-end number, 20 years, is now maximum 25 years, so there’s an additional five years of exposure for a defendant if they’re accused or convicted of the DUI with death or substantial bodily harm, so that’s for everybody across the board,” said Michael Troiano, a criminal defense attorney…
