Chain controls remain on I-80 over Donner Summit as holiday traffic builds

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Chain controls remained in effect this afternoon on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit as holiday traffic stayed heavy and drivers continued to slide off the roadway, Caltrans District 3 said in a social media post.

Caltrans urged drivers to slow down, increase following distance and “drive for the conditions” to help crews keep the interstate open over the summit.

As of the midafternoon update on Caltrans’ road conditions page, chains were required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels from Kingvale to Truckee in the eastbound direction, and from Truckee to about 4.7 miles west of Kingvale in the westbound direction. The same update said eastbound traffic was no longer being held at Kingvale as of about 3:03 p.m…
