Northeast Governors Blast Federal Freeze On Wind Projects, Warn Of Winter Grid Risk

A coalition of Northeast governors is escalating its standoff with the Department of the Interior, demanding the immediate rescission of stop-work orders that have paralyzed five major offshore wind projects.

In a letter addressed to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey—joined by Governors Kathy Hochul (NY), Ned Lamont (CT), and Dan McKee (RI)—warned that the federal blockade threatens not only the region’s economic stability but the reliability of the power grid as winter sets in.

At the center of the dispute is the Vineyard Wind project in Massachusetts.
