Albuquerque woman shares story of overcoming addiction with help from ACS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Living life on the streets, jumping from shelter to shelter and battling an addiction. That was the reality for an Albuquerque woman who said she felt lost in life, until help came along. 42-year-old Angela Sanchez said she spent most of her life addicted to methamphetamine, she always wanted to be sober but struggled to find the right care. Now almost one year sober, she tells us how her life completely changed.

“I couldn’t fathom being where I’m at now. Sometimes I still sit here and it’s surreal,” said Sanchez. Since the age of 13, New Mexico local, Angela Sanchez, said she has suffered from a methamphetamine addiction. “I was using everyday, yeah I mean everyday for like the past 27 years.”

Sanchez spent years living in her car, jumping from shelter to shelter, desperately trying to get off the streets. “I’ve been wanting to get sober for years. I tried doing it on my own and wasn’t able to do it,” said Sanchez. Then she decided to turn things around in her life in December of 2024, Sanchez stayed at the Gateway Center and quickly created a connection with Albuquerque Community Safety Peer Support Specialist, Ernesto Ortiz. Ortiz found a detox facility for her that could meet her treatment needs…
