As winter deepens its grip across the Northeast, Massachusetts is grappling with a sharp rise in influenza cases, part of a broader national wave that’s prompting health officials to sound the alarm.
According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Bay State is among those classified with “high” flu activity, with the City of Boston experiencing a staggering 114% increase in reported infections compared to previous weeks. This year’s flu season is proving particularly aggressive, driven by a new subclade K variant of the H3N2 strain, which experts describe as highly contagious and capable of causing severe symptoms. Nationwide, the flu virus has already claimed 1,900 lives and led to 49,000 hospitalizations, with no signs of peaking yet.
