Clarksville nonprofit aims to create county’s first year-round homeless shelter

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — As temperatures drop over the next few days, Clarksville nonprofit Clarksville Area Urban Ministries is reopening Montgomery County’s only warming shelter program Sunday at 4 p.m., at the Madison Street United Methodist Church, and now also at the local Salvation Army.

The church partners with Clarksville Area Urban Ministries, opening its doors when temperatures fall below 35 degrees for three consecutive days. However, this year, the nonprofit has more resources to help what organizers describe as a growing need among people experiencing homelessness.

“It’s like a lifeline for them,” Deborah Ashcraft, the warming shelter’s program manager, said. “A lot of them would not survive out in the cold temperatures night after night.”…
