SCDCA warns more than 236,000 residents potentially impacted by lending company data breach

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Nearly a quarter of a million residents in South Carolina may have had their data exposed in a breach that occurred months earlier, according to state records.

A data breach notice provided to the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) by Prosper Marketplace Inc. on Dec. 11 stated that the company learned on Sept. 1 of unauthorized activity on its systems. The peer-to-peer lending and personal finance company said it publicly reported the incident on its website on Sept. 17 and began notifying impacted customers on Dec. 9, after the investigation concluded in late November.

Prosper said it was also working with law enforcement. The company said the delay between the initial discovery of the data breach and notifications to those impacted was due to a manual review of records, which it described as a “labor-intensive and time-consuming process that involves hundreds of hours of careful review and analysis.”…
