Fairlawn receives $21M grant to improve safety on Route 18 corridor

FAIRLAWN, Ohio — The City of Fairlawn received a $21 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program, officials announced Friday.

The money will be used to improve safety on busy Route 18, where there have been at least five deadly accidents, mostly involving people walking across the busy highway and being hit by cars.

Sources tell 19 News one of the biggest concerns is people who are dropped off at a bus stop and decide to cross seven lanes of traffic, sometimes wearing all dark clothing, and most often ignoring the designated crosswalks.
