CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A First Alert Day has been declared for overnight through Monday morning due to blowing snow.
More snow showers are expected to move in overnight. Areas along and north of Highway 30 have the best chance of seeing this snow shower activity, with heavier snow showers expected the farther north you are and just a few flurries south of Highway 30. Because of the snow and high winds, a Winter Weather Advisory, Winter Storm Warning, and Blizzard Warning remain in effect through Monday morning. Areas not under winter weather alerts are under a Wind Advisory through Monday evening.
Winds remain strong throughout the night for all of eastern Iowa, so reduced visibility from blowing snow will be a concern for anyone that sees falling snow or has snow already on the ground. There is also a concern for slick spots on roadways, both from snow and from rain or meltwater that freezes before it can dry as temperatures plummet tonight. Lows fall into the high single digits and low teens by Monday morning with wind chills generally 10 to 15 below zero.
Any lingering snow showers end by sunrise on Monday and clouds will decrease throughout the day. It will continue to be cold and windy with highs only making it into the middle and upper teens and winds gusting over 40 mph at times through the afternoon. Winds die down Monday evening and Monday night as lows fall into the high single digits to near 10.
Tuesday and New Year’s Eve will bring lighter winds and highs in the upper 20s to low 30s. There is a chance for a few light snow showers New Years Eve night as a weak disturbance known as a clipper system passes by the area. We will continue to monitor this system over the next couple of days, but impacts at this point are expected to be slim to none…
