Layoffs ahead for some New Orleans city workers in the new year

NEW ORLEANS — Some New Orleans city employees will lose their jobs at the start of the new year as Mayor-elect Helena Moreno’s incoming administration moves forward with layoffs and a broader restructuring of City Hall.

The Moreno transition team says the changes are aimed at improving efficiency as the city prepares for a projected budget deficit in the next fiscal year.

Layoffs will impact unclassified employees in the Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families and the Office of Criminal Justice Coordination. Those employees were notified their employment will end Jan. 12, according to a statement from Moreno’s transition spokesperson…
