Winter storm: ‘Life-threatening’ travel conditions as blizzard arrives in Minnesota

Weather officials are warning of “dangerous, potentially life-threatening travel conditions” on Sunday through early Monday as a winter storm brings heavy snow and blizzard conditions to Minnesota.

The National Weather Service issued the warning on Sunday as a system arrived in the west of the state Sunday morning, and will intensify as it reaches the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin.

The Twin Cities is set to get hit the hardest in terms of snowfall, with the latest projections for 7-10 inches of snow, though the NWS says that localized totals of 10+ inches are also possible.

A blizzard warning is in effect across a huge swath of Minnesota. including the western Twin Cities metro, central Minnesota and west-central Minnesota, where gusts of 40-50 mph combined with snowfall rates of 0.50-0.75 inches per hour will create whiteout conditions.

“The combination of several inches of accumulating snow, strong northwesterly winds, and falling temperatures will combine to create a dangerous travel scenario across the region today,” the NWS says…
