Trains are a great way to travel to see the countryside without the hassle of driving.

To view fall foliage, this leaf-peeper boarded a train in Staunton for a three-hour, ride-and-dine excursion. I rode the rails on a 62-mile round-trip journey through the Shenandoah Valley.

The train departed from the Amtrak train station in Staunton’s Wharf Area Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Lodging, museums, a visitor center, restaurants, quaint shops and a seasonal farmers market are within walking distance…
