Mystery Body Found Off Balboa Park Freeway Fence By Passerby

A quiet Friday morning near Balboa Park turned into a crime scene after a passerby spotted a man’s body down an embankment, triggering a multi-agency response and a lot of unanswered questions.

California Highway Patrol officers and San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded to the area early yesterday and pronounced the man dead at the scene. Authorities described him as a white male, estimated to be about 40 years old. How he died is still an open question.

According to 10News, the passerby called authorities at about 7:30 a.m. First responders arrived and declared the man dead roughly 20 minutes later, at around 7:50 a.m. “As of right now, we are still trying to determine cause of death,” CHP Sgt. Daniel Ralph told the outlet. Investigators stayed on scene while the county medical examiner was notified, 10News reported.

Where It Happened

CHP officials said the body was found roughly 20 feet down from a fence line near Balboa Park by the freeway, a tricky spot that required responders to move carefully as they worked and collected evidence. A tent was found nearby, but Sgt. Ralph said it did not appear to be connected to the man, according to 10News. Highway Patrol officers and fire crews handled the initial response and secured the area as the investigation began.
