300+ groups urge Gov. Hochul to modernize New York’s Bottle Bill

Albany, NY (WRGB) — A coalition of more than 300 business, civic, environmental, and youth organizations is calling on Governor Hochul to include modernization of New York’s returnable container law, commonly known as the Bottle Bill, in the upcoming state budget.

The groups say the move is long overdue and point to New York’s own Solid Waste Management Plan, released two years ago, which recommended updating the law. They argue that despite those recommendations, no action has been taken.

According to the coalition, modernizing the Bottle Bill could generate up to $100 million in additional revenue for the state and save local taxpayers as much as $108 million annually by reducing litter cleanup and waste disposal costs. The groups say the changes would come at a time when New York faces multi-billion-dollar budget deficits…
