Driver detained after S.F. sideshow sets U-Haul truck ablaze

San Francisco police detained a driver after breaking up an illegal sideshow and vehicle fire early Saturday in the Outer Sunset.

Around 4:24 a.m., the police and fire departments received calls reporting a sideshow near the intersection of Kirkham and La Playa streets, as well as a nearby U-Haul truck “engulfed in flames,” police said in a statement. Officers “observed multiple vehicles driving recklessly and setting off fireworks as they worked to disperse the crowd,” the release states.

The fire department, meanwhile, responded to the box truck on fire near 48th Avenue and Kirkham Street, and extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported. Investigators deemed the vehicle fire suspicious and are investigating it as arson, Lt. Mariano Elias said.
