Until then, though, be ready for a very wintry feel to the day. Temperatures this afternoon will be in the 10s, with readings near 20 in the south. However, with winds still gusting to 30 to 45 mph during daylight hours, wind chills are likely to stay below zero for most of the area. A lucky few could see those numbers get just above zero, but the bottom line is a day to bundle up to keep warm if you’re heading out and about.

That combo of wind and cold is also keeping road conditions poor at times, though we’ve seen steady improvement throughout the morning and early afternoon. Road crews will keep working at it, and the sunshine we’re expecting today will help in that effort. You should still check the latest road conditions before you leave home, and give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going.

Skies remain mostly clear tonight, and winds will ease quite a bit more after dark. Overnight, those speeds will be 10 to 20 mph at most from the northwest. However, with thermometer temperatures headed to the single digits above zero, expect a negative sign on your wind chills through mid-morning on Tuesday…
