The Denver Police Department is embracing a high-tech approach to law enforcement as it tests a fleet of drones as first responders in emergencies. These unmanned aerial vehicles are capable of launching in mere seconds to provide officers with essential information during high-stress scenarios.
As detailed in a recent social media post from the Denver Police Department, which states, “Your Denver Police Department is testing cutting-edge drone technology to improve response times and enhance safety for both the community and officers.” These drones have already proved their worth. According to their own numbers, since their deployment on October 16th, the drones have been sent out 215 times and managed to be the first on the scene in over 80% of cases.
The effectiveness of this pilot program is not lost on taxpayers, as it’s reported to be implemented at zero additional cost to them. Piloted by two certified DPD drone pilots, the drones patrol within a 2-nautical-mile radius of DPD Headquarters, responding predominantly to outdoor, high-priority incidents.
