MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – Scammers are targeting people with loved ones who are incarcerated, the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
Officials say the scammer poses as someone with the sheriff’s office and claims the incarcerated person can be released via an ankle monitor program if they pay a fee. The victim is then told to run to a retail store — such as CVS or Walgreens — and send money through gift cards, prepaid cards or electronic transfers.
The sheriff’s office will never call and ask for money, gift cards or electronic payments to release someone from custody, the post said…
