I-59 lane shift in Trussville to impact commutes starting Jan. 6

A lane shift on I-59 in Trussville is set to affect daily commutes starting the evening of Jan. 6, 2026, as part of the ongoing widening project. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will move traffic to the outside lanes to begin the next phase of northbound construction, weather permitting.

The changes will impact traffic in three significant ways: I-59 northbound at I-459 will taper to one lane until traffic joins the temporary shifted outside lane just past the I-459 juncture. Additionally, US-11 traffic traveling onto northbound I-459 will be unable to merge left to take I-59 southbound to Birmingham. Lastly, I-459 northbound traffic exiting onto I-59 northbound will reduce to one lane.

US-11 drivers are urged to find alternate routes to Birmingham, and northbound motorists on I-59 and I-459 should expect delays at the interchange. These temporary traffic changes could last up to three months. Plans are also in place to close both northbound Chalkville Mountain Road (Exit 141) ramps for 40 days in Spring 2026…
