New law requires Indiana motorists to report changes to a car’s paint color

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Starting January 1, 2026, Hoosier motorists will be required by law to notify the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) if they change the color of their vehicle.

“Senate Enrolled Act 331, signed into law earlier this year by Governor Braun, updates Indiana Code 9-18.1-3, which requires vehicle owners to notify the BMV if a person changes the color of their passenger vehicle,” wrote BMV officials in a news release.
