Cold Weather Into The New Year

Weak Weather Systems Bring A Little Snow From Time to Time

Wind Advisories remain in effect today for everywhere across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England including New York City & Long Island. Winds will be gusting past 40 mph at time thanks to a major storm in Eastern Canada and the tight pressure gradient between it and high pressure to the west. We are in a cold air mass today. Most places won’t make it above the lower 30s for highs. Add the wind to the mix and it will feel like it is in the upper teens much of the time. At least there will be some sunshine around to take the sting out of the air. A passing snow shower especially inland can not be ruled out completely. Skies will clear tonight but the wind will still be a factor though it should ease somewhat. Most lows will be in the low to mid 20s with a few upper teens in the coldest inland locations.

The lake effect snow machine is working overtime in Upstate New York. It may pause briefly but we do have weather systems moving along in the northwest flow and that will bring some snow back over the next few days. For our area these systems are weak and are not expected to develop. The first one approaching Wednesday morning could bring a few snow showers through. The second Thursday morning also could bring some snow showers through the area. There is always the chance that the ground could get whitened up in some spots or even the chance that somebody winds up with a coating to an inch or so but it shouldn’t amount to anything more than that.

The overall weather pattern remains cold through the weekend and into next week. Wednesday, New Year’s Eve we will have sunshine and some clouds along with less in the way of wind. There could be some snow showers early Wednesday morning before daybreak. Highs will be in the 30s. Temperatures will be in the mid 20s to around 30 degrees when the new year arrives at midnight.

Wednesday night into Thursday morning another upper trough and cold front moves through and we could see snow showers or even a period of snow that leaves a light accumulation of a coating to an inch or so. It should be mostly done by daybreak Thursday. Then we will see some sunshine develop but it will be cold with highs just into the 30s. Friday also will be a very cold day with some sunshine and highs again just into the 30s in most places. It remains cold through the weekend with below average temperatures and conditions should be mostly dry through Sunday.
