Montgomery County Reminds Residents That All Fireworks Are Illegal, With $500 and $1,000 Fines

With New Year’s celebrations approaching, Montgomery County officials are reminding residents that all fireworks are illegal in the county, including items many people mistakenly believe are harmless, such as sparklers. The prohibition applies year-round, not just during holidays.

Under county law, the private use or possession of any fireworks, including sparklers, can result in a $500 fine. In addition, selling fireworks anywhere in Maryland is illegal and carries a $1,000 fine. Officials emphasize that the rules are in place to protect public safety, reduce fire risks, and prevent injuries, which tend to spike around holidays when fireworks are used.

Takoma Park Police shared, “At New Year’s and at all other times, we want to remind everyone that ALL fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in Montgomery County. Private use and possession of fireworks, including sparklers, carries a $500 fine. Selling fireworks in Maryland is against the law and carries a $1,000 fine.”…
