Charlotte Man Charged With Drug Possession After Monroe K9 Unit Thwarts Escape Attempt

A routine traffic stop on Christmas Eve in Monroe took a turn for the dramatic when a suspect learned the hard way that flight from the police, especially when their canine unit is at the ready, is a futile effort. According to the Monroe Police Department’s social media post, the incident began with a traffic stop on a Hyundai for expired tags and a tail light issue near Campus Park Drive and E. Roosevelt Blvd. shortly after midnight.

The situation escalated when a K9 handler, arriving as a routine backup, joined the scene. Officers soon noted the whiff of marijuana emanating from the vehicle and asked the individual, identified as Sadarius Covington from Charlotte, to step out of the car. Upon his exit, officers spotted methamphetamine in a bag on the driver’s seat, precipitating Covington’s ill-fated attempt to sprint away from the scene…
