NCDHHS offers free radon testing kits starting Jan. 1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services will offer free radon testing kits starting Thursday, Jan. 1.

Radon is a naturally occurring colorless, odorless gas that is released from the ground and into the air. Radon can become dangerous when it gets trapped inside homes and builds up to a harmful amount.

Breathing in radon can cause lung cancer in both smokers and nonsmokers, and increase the risk 10-20 times in smokers, according the the Environmental Protection Agency…
