Mayor urges residents to avoid I-77 amid ongoing construction, accidents

Just 11 months ago, the Richfield Times reported a spike in crashes on I-77 in Richfield, many caused by drivers speeding through construction zones near ramps, according to Police Chief Michael Swanson.

Fire Chief George Seifert noted in September 2025 that construction in Richfield had finished, but warned that ongoing work in Bath would likely push backups into the village. That prediction has proved accurate.

The most recent rush-hour crash on I-77 near Wheatley Road halted southbound traffic from Richfield to Independence and backed up northbound lanes from Montrose for hours.
