Ferris State professor fired after arrest by ICE in Detroit

BIG RAPIDS, MI – Ferris State University has fired an associate professor after his arrest by federal immigration agents, according to a copy of his personnel file obtained by MLive/The Grand Rapids Press.

Sumith Gunasekera, who was taken into U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in November, was fired for misconduct, according to a Dec. 11 letter obtained with his personnel file via Freedom of Information Act.

In the letter, Provost Robert Fleischman wrote that his firing followed a hearing, which Gunasekera did not attend, to determine if he violated university policy by providing false or misleading information on his employment application and about his leave of absence…
