A deputy from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office fatally shot a man near Imperial Beach Pier earlier this month, as confirmed in a recent release of critical incident video footage. The incident, involving 51-year-old Gary Gates, occurred last Sunday, at around 1:38 p.m. on 940 Seacoast Drive, Hoodline reports.
Deputy Maxwell Hammond discharged his weapon at Gates, striking him after the latter produced a knife and allegedly moved towards the officers. San Diego Police Department, leading the investigation under a countywide memorandum of understanding, aims to determine whether Deputy Hammond’s actions were within the bounds of the law. Gates, who was from Evansville, Indiana, and had lived in San Diego for about two years, later died from his injuries in a local hospital.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office stated, “We are committed to transparency, public trust and compliance with the law,” in releasing the video of the shooting.
