LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Around 30 kids are spending part of their winter break at an annual day camp at a community center in the basement of a Lansing church called Own Your Color. It’s meant to allow kids to celebrate their culture and the color of their skin, while learning about other cultures.
The camp is run by Ceci Bordayo, a church member who works in the children’s department. She says the camp started with a conversation between herself and a student who told her they were ashamed of the color of their skin.
“In that moment I was just encouraging him, you got to be proud of your culture, be proud of your color, you got to own your color,” said Bordayo. “Something just kind of sparked, and I decided we need to bring a camp that exposes children to a variety of different cultures.”…
