Kol Hakavod: Gov. Hochul Blocks Demolition Of Historic East Flatbush Synagogue

Brooklyn, NY (December 29, 2025)

A nearly century-old synagogue in East Flatbush has been spared from the wrecking ball after New York Governor Kathy Hochul stepped in to halt its planned demolition as part of a large redevelopment project. Congregation Chaim Albert, widely known as the Kingsbrook Shul, had been slated to be torn down to make way for state-funded affordable housing on the surrounding campus.

The synagogue was founded in 1928 to provide a religious home for Jewish patients and neighborhood residents at a time when antisemitism in local hospitals limited access to care.
