I was born and raised in Baton Rouge. My perspective of the city has changed since reporting on it.

There I was, kneeling on the cold concrete, watching the ribbon-cutting for a new casino opening. The manager of Bally’s, Richard Cannon, hugged Wendie Green, a 31-year employee of the Belle, and the whole crowd erupted in cheers.

Green cut the red ribbon with a giant grin. I got chills — and not from the mild, 65-degree weather we were having in early December. Who knew a casino opening would make me emotional?

After the cheers, “Swag Surfin’” bellowed out of the outdoor speakers, and purple and gold drones lit up the night over the Mississippi River bridge.

“This is so Baton Rouge,” I thought…
