Community mural project celebrates Afrofuturism as part of Iowa City’s Black Future Fest

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa City Senior Center is inviting community members of all ages to take part in a collaborative mural project celebrating Black creativity, imagination and visions of the future.

The Community Mini-Canvas Mural Project is part of Parables of the Future: Black Future Fest, a citywide celebration scheduled for January and February 2026. The project is supported by the City of Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee.

Participants are asked to create 4-by-4-inch canvas artworks inspired by Afrofuturism, a cultural movement that blends Black history and culture with futuristic themes. The individual canvases will be assembled into a large-scale community mural installation…
