Slower speeds in hopes of safer neighborhoods

BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — The Ada County Highway District, or ACHD, is working with the City of Boise to launch the North End Neighborhood Slow Zone Pilot program. Reducing speed limits in parts of the North End to 20 mph. A five mph change.

Over the course of the next three months, 8th, 9th, 13th, 15th and 16th Streets as well as Fort Street, Hays Street and Harrison Boulevard will all have new 20 mph signs. This is different from a recent decision from the City of Boise to set the default speed limit, where no sign is posted, to 20 mph.

“Really, lowering the speed limit one, it just gives everyone more time to see each other, you’re going slower you have more time to see what’s going on.” said Cody Homan, the accessibility and mobility supervisor at ACHD. “Every five mile an hour reduction makes a significant difference in the severity of a crash, especially for pedestrians.”…
