ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – After three decades in law enforcement, Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina has officially retired. Monday, the chief was surrounded by the department’s executive staff, sworn officers, professional staff and two cadet classes for his retirement ceremony.

Chief Medina was named as permanent chief of APD in 2021 by Mayor Tim Keller. Medina says he took the position at a time when officers were feeling pressure because of the George Floyd protests, the Department of Justice oversight and the COVID pandemic. Medina says fulfilling the terms of consent decree was one of his biggest accomplishments. He also touts a recent drop in homicides and car thefts.
