ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)– The City of Albany has been awarded a $675,000 grant for repairs to the Swinburne Skating Rink roof. According to the city, the rink has been closed since 2024, after a roof leak caused unsafe skating conditions.

“For decades before and in the years since, the Swinburne Park Skating Rink has been a year-round resource for our community before the failing roof forced us to close the facility last year,” Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said. “This grant will allow the City to repair the roof and reopen this vital resource to the community while our next mayor engages the community to develop the plan to dream even bigger and implement the additional improvements our residents want to see and deserve in this prime park space in the City of Albany.”
Sheehan said the failing roof was believed to be caused by the improper installation of solar panels.
The funding was awarded by the New York State’s Regional Economic Development Council awards. According to the project description listed in the awards, the goal is to reopen the ice skating and roller skating rink, which has been serving the area since 1969…
