2025 was a chaotic year for New Orleans. Here’s a recap.

NEW ORLEANS — It’s been quite the year in the New Orleans area. As we wait for the Fleur de Lis to drop, it’s hard not to think about the sad, unusual, and remarkable things we’ve witnessed in the last 365 days.

Here’s a recap of the moments we’ll remember–for better or worse–from 2025.

Bourbon Street terror attack

At 3:15 a.m. on Jan. 1, Shamsud-Din Jabbar rammed a truck into a crowd of people celebrating New Year’s Eve on Bourbon Street. By the time police killed him in a shootout near Conti Street, 14 people were dead and dozens more were injured. Two pipe bombs were found nearby and defused.

In the surreal 48 hours to follow, the City of New Orleans reopened Bourbon Street with a ceremony and the postponed Sugar Bowl kicked off. Fans lined up at the Super Dome just steps from the Benson Tower, where at the same time, FBI leaders were telling a room full of reporters that they had confirmed Jabbar had acted alone.

The same month, Southeast Louisiana was hit by a once-in-a-century snowstorm. Some areas got up to 11 inches of snow in a single day…
