Salt Lake City Police Pioneers Integration of Social Workers for Enhanced Community Care

In an innovative approach to law enforcement and community care, the Salt Lake City Police Department integrates licensed social workers into its operations, creating a more supportive framework for those in need. The initiative, known as the Community Connection Team, is designed to bridge the gap between public safety and social services, a move that has seen significant engagement with residents requiring various forms of assistance.

According to a social media post from the Salt Lake City Police Department, this co-response model is active in “meeting people where they are, reducing reliance on the criminal justice system, and connecting individuals in crisis with long-term support.” It’s not the first time we’ve seen police departments experiment with such programs, but Salt Lake City claims to be among the pioneers since launching its initiative back in 2016.
