Oregon drivers react as the transportation tax increases head to next year’s ballot

SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — Oregon drivers are weighing the cost of filling up against the need to maintain roads as a referendum aimed at overturning newly passed transportation taxes officially heads to the ballot.

The measure, which qualified for the ballot on Tuesday, would ask voters whether to overturn a package of transportation tax and fee increases passed by lawmakers, including a six-cent increase in the state gas tax. Until voters decide, those increases are on hold.

As drivers fill their tanks, opinions on the proposal are mixed, even among those who say they support investing in Oregon’s roads.
