Proposed Indiana bill would require schools to include text of Ten Commandments in libraries, classrooms

INDIANAPOLIS —  A bill has been introduced that would require school corporations across the Hoosier state to have a poster with the text of the Ten Commandments in each school library and classroom.

House Bill 1086, which was authored by State Rep. Michelle Davis (R-District 58), stipulates that school corporations must “place a durable poster or framed picture representing the text of the Ten Commandments in each school library and classroom.”

The bill is expected to be filed when the Indiana General Assembly gathers for session next week. The bill will undergo its first reading on Jan. 5, 2026, and be referred to the Committee on Education.

This follows a motion filed this week by Indiana Gov. Mike Braun and Attorney General Todd Rokita requesting that a federal court remove an injunction blocking the placement of a historical monument displaying the Ten Commandments at the Indiana Statehouse.
